Text neck is a new term given to describe the condition caused by looking down to text, play games, email etc on smartphones. It is becoming an epidemic especially in the younger generation. It is characterized by neck pain, chronic headaches, upper back pain and shoulder pain and can lead to early onset of arthritis, disc degeneration in the spine and even the potential for decreased lung capacity. Studies suggest that 79% of the population have cell phones with them the entire day and spend 2 to 4 hours or more looking down. The average human head weighs about 12 pounds, as you can see from the chart below, as you increase the angle at which you look down, the weight on the cervical spine increases – up to 60 pounds with a 60 degree angle. This is like strapping an eight year old to your neck and carrying it around!
