What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care offers a unique approach to healthcare. It is based upon the fact that within each of us exists a self-healing, self-regulating mechanism that, without structural interference, maintains our bodies in good health. Subluxations, which are misalignments of the spinal vertebra, cause interference to the transmission of impulses in the nerves. Thus, subluxations of the spine upset the communication system of the body and disrupt the self-healing intelligence within our bodies.
Chiropractic care involves the reduction and correction of spinal subluxations in order to restore proper nerve system function. Our bodies require strong, stable structural health in order to maintain good overall health and reach our full health potential.
Chiropractic healthcare is defined as “The science and art which utilizes the inherent recuperative powers of the body and deals with the relationship between the nervous system and the spinal column including its immediate articulations and the role of this relationship in the restoration and maintenance of health.” (South Carolina Code of Laws 40-9-10-A)
What is a Subluxation?
A subluxation is the condition when a vertebrae has lost its proper position, or has become misaligned. The misalignment can cause pinching of the nerves that control the function of all the body’s cells, tissues and systems. Without these nerve impulses the body can not function properly.
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a gentle, but specific movement of the spine which your chiropractor makes by using his hand, or using a small hand held device. The technique that is chosen depends upon many things. A chiropractic adjustment can be a rapid but specific movement or just a light sustained pressure. Spinal and nervous system corrections can be achieved by an adjustment because once the adjustment is delivered, it enables your body to more accurately process information.
Who Can be Helped by Chiropractic?
Everyone who has a spine! Chiropractic care can benefit individuals at every stage of life. Each patient’s treatment is individually tailored to their needs, with consideration given to his or her age and history.
Children need a strong subluxation-free spine for proper nerve transmission in order to grow and achieve full health potential. Even infants can have subluxations from the delivery process.
To maintain optimum nervous system functioning and overall health throughout life, everyone should have an annual chiropractic exam or spinal screening.
Nerve interference can occur without causing pain. Only a small percentage of nerves have the ability to transmit pain. These nerves require quite a bit of stimulation before transmitting the pain signal. Nerves that are not specifically designed to transmit pain require significantly more stimulation before pain is felt. Therefore, pain is often the last symptom to show up and the first symptom to go away. Having subluxations reduced early, before pain develops, will allow nerves to keep the body systems in check and reduces the possibility of pain. The only way to know if your nerves and health are compromised is to have a chiropractic examination. When the body’s systems function properly optimum health can be achieved.
